Brevinin-1 E8.13 is a 24-residue antimicrobial and anticancer peptide cloned from the skin secretion of Sylvirana guentheri, a frog native to Ha Giang, Vietnam, published in Current Issues in Molecular Biology (August 2025). Preclinical, in-vitro research only — no human trials.
Brevinin-1 E8.13 showed potent activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 1.5 μM) and cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines (A549, AGS, Jurkat, HCT116, HL60, HepG2; IC50 7.5–31.6 μM), while sparing and even promoting proliferation of normal human dermal fibroblasts at lower concentrations.

A net +4 charge and ~62% hydrophobic content drive electrostatic binding to negatively charged bacterial membranes, causing destabilization and lysis — the classic cationic-antimicrobial-peptide mechanism. Above a concentration threshold, the peptide forms pores in cancer cell membranes causing ion leakage and rapid death, and was also shown to downregulate Cyp1a1 gene expression in liver cancer cells.
